Learn about internship opportunities with Kekeli Ghana, an organization dedicated to addressing human rights issues in Ghana, West Africa. Meet Carrie Brown, founder and director of Kekeli Ghana, to learn about not only the obstacles and successes of special needs children in Ghana but also how ACPHS students can intern with the organization.

Background:

For the past 15 years, Kekeli Ghana has worked to improve the health and wellness of special needs children while also helping them to achieve their full potential. Some of the work being done by Kekeli includes:

  • Creating self-advocacy groups so people with special needs can learn their rights
  • Developing parent-advocacy groups so parents can support each other
  • Promoting the inclusion of special needs students in standard schools
  • Arranging for wheelchairs, ramps, and other equipment to make it possible for these children to attend school
  • Obtaining health care, (e.g., medication to treat seizure disorders, surgery for a baby born with a hole in its heart)
  • Coordinating physical, occupational and speech therapy for children with Cerebral Palsy and other conditions
  • Providing nutritional food packages for families who cannot afford to give their children a good diet
  • Creating a model inclusive school where children with disabilities can learn alongside their non-disabled peers

Two buildings are completed: a resource and assessment center and a nursery-kindergarten building with plans to complete the complex providing education through grade 8.
